The oil filter is an important part of protecting the engine. It plays a central role in filtering out impurities and keeping the oil clean. In this article, MyMROmarts will detail what is an oil filter, how an oil filter works, how to change an oil filter, and the drawback of an oil filter.
What Is The Oil Filter
The oil filter is one of the important lubrication system components. The oil filter is a device that is installed in the filter of the internal combustion engine oil circuit system. The main function is to filter impurities, dirt, and metal particles in the oil. Ensure the cleanliness of engine oil and reduce engine wear.
How Does An Oil Filter Work
The working principle of the oil filter is mainly based on the function of the filter screen and the valve core. As the oil is pumped from the engine and into the filter, impurities, and contaminants are trapped by the screen. Screens are usually made of fibrous material with a highly porous structure. Blocks tiny solid particles while maintaining oil fluidity. Protected by the strainer, clean oil is returned to the engine for continued operation.
In addition, some oil filters are also equipped with a spool. The spool is a device that can control the passage, and it will adjust the size of the passage according to the pressure and flow of the oil. When the flow of oil is high, the spool opens to ensure enough oil flows to the engine. And when the oil flow is small, the spool will close a part of the passage. Make the engine oil flow through the filter screen for more detailed filtration to ensure the cleanliness of the engine oil.
How To Change An Oil Filter
a. Before performing any maintenance operations, first shut off the engine and ensure that diesel engine parts and the machine is in a stable parked state.
b. Locate and check the oil filter position. Usually located in the engine area, it is a metal or plastic housing that connects to the oil line.
c. Before changing the oil filter, it is better to drain part of the oil to reduce the possibility of oil leakage. The way to drain the oil is to open the oil drain bolt and let part of the old oil flow out.
d. Using a suitable tool, unscrew the old oil filter from the seat. During this process, a small amount of oil may leak, so keep an oil pan ready to collect the leaked oil.
e. After removing the old filter, check the filter seat. Make sure the surface is clean and free of old seals or debris.
f. Apply a new coat of oil to the seal ring of the filter, and install the new filter on the seat. Hand tighten until the seal fully contacts the seat, then about 3/4 of a turn with a suitable tool is sufficient.
g. After confirming that the filter has been installed, add new engine oil. According to the machine manual or identification, determine the correct type and capacity of engine oil, and fill the new engine oil to the designated position.
h. After filling the engine oil, start the engine and let it run for a while. Then turn off the engine and check whether the oil level is within the marked line. If necessary, add an appropriate amount of engine oil to the designated mark line.
i. After completing the oil filter change, clean up the work area. Check for oil leaks and verify that all operations are done correctly.
The drawback of the oil filter
It can only filter out 60% of the impurities in the oil, and the filtration efficiency is low.
In actual use, there are still 40% of harmful impurities that cannot be effectively filtered out by the paper filter element. Among the 40% of impurities, ferromagnetic impurities are relatively small and hard, so most of them are ferromagnetic impurities, which will cause maximum damage to the engine. This is because the existing oil filter relies on a single paper filter element hole to intercept and filter harmful impurities in the oil. The smaller the micropores of the filter paper, the better the filtering effect, but the poorer the oil passing capacity.
The filtration efficiency is zero under special conditions.
The existing oil filter is equipped with a bypass valve at the bottom of the paper filter element. This is to ensure that the engine oil can be smoothly circulated back to the engine when the engine oil viscosity is high at a cold start or the paper filter element is partially or completely blocked. When the bypass valve is opened under the pressure of the oil pump, the oil circulating back to the engine through the bypass valve will not be filtered by the paper filter element, but will also remove the large particles of impurities that have been filtered out by the paper filter element. It rushes back into the engine through the bypass valve, causing continuous secondary wear to the engine.
Every coin has two sides, and so does the oil filter. Luckily, there are many professional engine oil filter suppliers who aim to make the better oil filter. For example, MyMROmarts have many high-quality replacement engine oil filters of different brands for sale, such as oil filter hh15032430 for Kubota D722. Meanwhile, it has prepared aftermarket different types of engine oil filters for tractors, trucks, semi-trucks, excavators, forklifts, and other vehicles.
