What is a solenoid?

A solenoid is a piece of wire, wound into circles, which acts as a magnet when carrying an electric current. It’s comprised of a thin coil of wire, the housing and a moveable steel plunger. When the power turns on, the magnetic field activates to pull the plunger back in. It works by producing an electromagnetic field around a movable core, called an armature. When compelled to move by the electromagnetic field, the motion of that armature opens and closes valves or switches and turns electrical energy into mechanical motion and force. A solenoid allows an engine solenoid valve to open to regulate the flow of gases or liquids via electricity.

Woodward solenoids

Woodward is a brand from the United States, it’s specialized in solenoid valves, governors, regulating control systems, solenoids, electronic hydraulic amplifiers, actuators, current pressure converters, and so on. A woodward solenoid has several important functions in engines:    

1. Run-stop levers: shutting down and restarting internal combustion engines automatically while idling to conserve fuel.     

2. Chokes: managing the mixture of air and fuel to work in a cold engine.

3. Throttles: regulating air-fuel fusion to manage speed and air supply.     

4. Clutches: controlling the starter motors in cars with manual transmission     

5. Diesel engines: shutting off fuel valves to prevent damage resulting from high speeds, hot temperatures, and low lube pressure.

Trombetta solenoids

Trombetta solenoids turn electric power into mechanical work. By generating a linear electrical magnetic field that interacts with mechanical components, solenoids help close and open internal valves, and initiate mechanical chain reactions to monitor other operational circuits. A trombetta solenoid has the same functions in engines like a woodward solenoid.
